NumbersUSA Tries to Balance Immigration Numbers Using Bipartisan Support

Established in 1996, NumbersUSA is a grassroots organization that advocates for the return of legal immigration numbers to historical levels in the United States. The group was founded by Roy Beck, a conservative journalist. His organization was established based on the recommendations of two congressional panels.

The panels noted that the right number of immigrants to the country is very important to maintain the standard of living of U.S. citizens. They suggested that the immigration numbers be lowered to a more sustainable level.

They’re an offshoot of the FAIRO or the “Federation of American Immigration Reform Organizations”; which was founded in 1982 to represent the interests of citizens who believed in individual freedom and opposed mass-unlimited immigration.

Reasons NumbersUSA Wants to Support the Immigration Reform

About 18 million workers in the United States are frustrated by the lack of full-time jobs. They are also the ones who are most likely to be affected by the effects of immigration. On the other hand, those who are looking for lower-skilled jobs tend to find them filled by immigrants.

Many workers are struggling with low wages due to the effects of immigration. In certain industries, such as meatpacking and hospitality, foreign workers are being paid only close to poverty levels. This has affected workers in these sectors, such as those in construction and hospitality.

The Organization’s Goals and Values

The group’s core values are focused on criticizing the excessive number of immigrants that the government has allowed to enter the country. It believes that this has affected the quality of life for Americans. NumbersUSA also strongly opposes xenophobia and other forms of discrimination.

Although it supports equality for all Americans regardless of their backgrounds, the group also believes that immigration should be allowed within a sustainable range.

Who is Roy Beck?

Before establishing NumbersUSA, Beck was a journalist who worked for various newspapers in different states. He became interested in analyzing the country’s politics during the 1990s. As a reporter, he covered Congress for Booth Newspapers. During his time with the company, he was one of the first journalists in the country to cover the environment.
