WAKE UP AND SMELL THE OIL!
At a casual glance, it would appear that most conservation organizations are staffed by dedicated (some might say fanatical) "friends of the planet" and financed, largely by the wealthier segment of society - be they leaders of industry and commerce, sports stars, movie stars, or rock stars.

One can easily imagine a group of the latter individuals, aboard a million dollar
60 ft. (18 m.) fast motor yacht or sportfishing boat - earnestly lamenting the depletion of the ozone layer, or the scarcity of gamefish, as they idly gaze back at the huge wake streaming out behind them.

In all likelihood, they are giving little thought to this wake (other than thinking it a pretty sight or, perhaps, hoping to see a giant marlin appear behind it) and are oblivious to the ugly reality underlying this rushing wall of water.

The truth is: that this wake (bigger than that of many cruise ships) like a huge writhing parasite, providing nothing to it's host, is sucking up fuel at an astonishing rate - and creating widespread havoc for any other boat, or fragile coastal marine environment in it's path. It is easy to understand, by simply imagining that one has set out with the sole purpose of generating such an immense far reaching wave, why it's appetite for energy is so voracious.

Such a vessel would usually be powered by a pair of diesel engines in the 1.000 h.p. (745 k.w.) range - consuming a total of approximately 100 gallons (378 liters) of fuel per hour. Of this, about 75 gallons (283 liters) per hour are used for the sole purpose of creating this wake. Or, to paint a more vivid picture - imagine that, once every hour, a couple of crew members pour a barrel and a half of diesel oil overboard into the gaping maw of this huge parasitic wake.

Perhaps, it's time to take a hard look at what we are leaving behind in our wake - both literally and figuratively.

note to television journalists: Please look up the meaning of these two words, before  literally is, figuratively, mangled beyond recognition.
HOW ON EARTH?

The question is: How, on earth, we could have arrived at a stage where the average 60 ft. (18 m.) fast motor boat is priced at well over a million dollars, wastes enormous amounts of fuel - and performs very poorly on the open sea?

Many pages of this web site are devoted to answering this question. In a nutshell however, the answer is: It's a conspiracy! Okay, so maybe there are no furtive figures slipping each other cryptic messages  - and no master plan to wreak havoc on the environment and socioeconomic conditions throughout the world.

There are however, many unwitting participants  in this "conspiracy" - constantly and loudly reinforcing each other's opinion that: "The Emperor is wearing the finest set of clothes the world has ever seen!" We plan to show that "The Emperor is as naked as the day that he was born"

Or, to use a modern illustration, we intend to be the "whistle blowers" of the main stream  boating industry - pointing out their significant contribution to pollution and the failings of their product in regard to price and performance.

It has taken about 50 years for sailing catamarans to go from being the pariah of the sailing establishment to the darling of the charter fleets. We are hopeful that our efforts will help in shortening this transition period for "ultra fuel efficient power catamarans". This catergory does not include most, of the power catamarans currently produced.
